If you are in the market for a pre-owned motorcycle, you probably have a mental checklist ready. You are checking the service history, inspecting the tires, listening to the engine note, and ensuring the V5C logbook is present. But there is one crucial question that catches many buyers off guard: Does my used bike come with road tax?
At Mallory Motorcycles, we want to ensure your buying experience is seamless and completely legal. In this guide, we break down exactly how motorcycle road tax works for used vehicles, why the rules changed dramatically a few years ago, and what you need to do before you twist the throttle and ride your new pride and joy home.
To understand how used bike road tax works today, we have to look back at October 1, 2014. This was the date the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) implemented one of the biggest shake-ups to vehicle administration in modern British history.
Before October 2014, road tax was tied directly to the vehicle itself. Motorbikes displayed a physical, paper tax disc on their handlebars or forks. If a bike had six months of tax left on it when it was sold, that tax stayed with the bike. The new owner inherited those remaining months for free, making “long tax and MOT” a major selling point in classified ads.
However, in 2014, the DVLA abolished the paper tax disc entirely, moving to a fully digital system. Along with the disappearance of the paper disc came a massive change in how tax status is handled during a change of ownership.
The short answer is no. Since the 2014 rules came into effect, road tax never transfers with the vehicle to a new owner.
The moment a used motorcycle is sold, the existing road tax is automatically cancelled by the DVLA. It does not matter if the previous owner paid for a full year of tax just the day before you bought it; the second the registration details change hands, the bike’s tax status resets to ‘Untaxed’.
Therefore, when you buy a used bike from a private seller or a dealership, it will legally have zero road tax the moment you become the owner.
Because the tax cannot be transferred, the DVLA protects the seller by issuing an automatic refund for any complete remaining months of vehicle tax.
When the seller notifies the DVLA that the motorbike has been sold (either online or by posting the V5C), the DVLA calculates the remaining full months of tax and sends a cheque to the seller’s registered address. This is why sellers can no longer use remaining tax as a financial incentive to bump up their asking price.
Because a used bike is instantly untaxed when ownership changes, you cannot legally ride it on public roads until you have taxed it yourself. Fortunately, the digital system makes this incredibly fast and easy to do right from your smartphone before you leave the showroom or the seller’s driveway.
To tax your newly purchased motorbike, you will need one of the following:
Once you have the green slip, follow these simple steps:
Riding an untaxed motorcycle is a serious offense. Because the system is entirely digital, police forces and roadside Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras can cross-reference your bike’s registration with the DVLA database in milliseconds.
If you are caught riding an untaxed bike, you face:
To recap: No matter what a seller tells you, a used motorbike does not come with road tax. Thanks to the DVLA changes introduced back in 2014, vehicle tax stays with the person, not the machine.
